What is the NIWO and what does it mean for me as a courier?

Updated at: 2023-03-06 11:26

NIWO stands for Nationale en Internationale Wegvervoer Organisatie. They are the licensing authority for Dutch road transport and determine the maximum load capacity of your bus.

Whether you have a Mercedes Sprinter, a tail lift or a box truck:

all courier vans in the Netherlands have a maximum payload (including van and driver) of 500 kilograms.

In the EU, as of 20 May 2022, the total payload, including van and driver weight will be 2.5 tonnes.

At Brenger we carry transports of up to 200kg per job.  But if you have multiple jobs in your van, it quickly exceeds 500 kilograms. So check carefully whether you need a NIWO permit. We don't want you to run the risk of a high fine if you have more than the allowed payload in your van!

Ultimately, this is your responsibility. Brenger would like to help you by requiring the weight per item from our customers as best we can. Through this link, you can check your van's weight by using your license plate.
